Founded in 1814 at the cradle of the Asiatic Society of Bengal, Indian Museum is the earliest and the largest multipurpose Museum not only in the Indian subcontinent but also in the Asia-Pacific region of the world.

I have been to the Indian museum in Kolkata around four years back. I
remember the museum to be huge in area since I was easily lost after I exited an exhibition room. The museum had many galleries dedicated to a variety of artifacts, be it indigenous crafts, artworks by renowned artists, fossil and skeleton display, Egyptian mummies, etc. Its collections depict the cultural history of India from prehistoric to Muslim times. The present building, opened in 1875, comprises sections devoted to geology, zoology, industry, archaeology, art, and ethnology. The coin room contains the largest collection of Indian coins in the world.

It took me a couple of hours to visit and observe the whole museum. While I looked around and discerned the artifacts around me, I found myself traveling back into that particular period and create scenarios in my head. As I exited, I wished that the government would have taken more efforts to maintain such an old museum, since it contains priceless objects.
